Confiscating items from Children

Our belief

The school reserves the right to confiscate dangerous or inappropriate items from students and staff when these items may put others at risk or disrupt the running of the school.

Actions

  1. Items may be considered dangerous through their nature or the intent of the person in charge of the item. For example a chair about to be thrown can be considered a dangerous item. Using this definition any dangerous item may be removed from a child, parent or staff member on the school site.

  2. Items which are specifically banned include drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, betel nut, chewing gum, whiteout or weapons which can include sharp objects.

  3. Cell phones (other than those used by senior management), Walkmen, minidisc players, electronic games and similar personal electronic entertainment and communication tools are not to be turned on during the hours of instruction unless they are being used as an integral part of teaching and learning.

  4. Where it is important for cell phones to be on during the day they should be left with the Principal's PA.

  5. When an item is confiscated the following steps should be taken:
    a. The person from whom the item is confiscated should be clearly informed of the reason and the length of time the item will be confiscated.
    b. The item should be placed in a bag or envelope with the name and contents clearly recorded on the outside.
    c. A report should immediately be emailed to the Principal's PA (or sent on paper) which records the name of the person the item has confiscated from, the reason, when the item should be returned, any follow-up action which is required.
    d. The item should be sent to the Principal's PA who will store it securely and organise any further action required.
