Classroom Assistants

Our belief

Classroom Helpers provide valuable support for the teacher as the teacher undertakes teaching. Classroom helpers are not teachers.

Actions

  1. Teacher Assistants are allocated by the Principal. Priorities are established based on based on need and the budget.

  2. All teachers need to establish a written job description for their Assistants based on the generic KoroBoro International School Job Descritpion for Teacher Assistants. A copy should be sent to the Principal. Teachers are responsible for the formal appraisal of their Teacher Assistant.

  3. The Teacher Assistants' hours of work are 7.30am to 3.30pm. Lateness should be reported to the Deputy Principal responsible for Teacher Assistants.

  4. Appropriate roles of Teacher Assistants are:
    Supervise activity groups.
    Organising paints and materials
    Sharpening pencils.
    Collating booklets.
Keeping the classroom organised and clean.
    Setting up audio-visual equipment.
    Making teaching materials, charts.
    Filing.
    Entering data.
    Help with supervision on excursions.
    Collect and return equipment.
    Caring for a sick student.
    Helping with tuck-shop orders.

It is important to remember that classroom assistant and helpers should be within visual contact of the teacher when working with students unless approval has been granted by a senior staff member. Please see your cluster leader if you wish to alter this arrangement for specific activities.

Classroom assistants and helpers start work at 7.30am and finish at 2.30pm. In certain circumstances these hours may be modified. This would only be done in consultation with the class teacher and a member of the executive. Staff should try and provide a written routine, particularly in the early stages so assistants understand clearly what is expected of them.

A professional development programme is provided for assistants and helpers. Attendance is expected. In most cases this involves two to three afternoons per term until 3.30pm.

Teaching staff is involved in the regular review of classroom assistant and helpers. This is coordinated by cluster leaders.
